With dedication, passion and commitment to her profession, Lagos-based teacher wins Maltina Teacher of the Year, N10m, SUV and three-bedroom apartment.
In a world where many people measure success by the glamour of their professions, titles or social connections, Busayo Adeyemi has demonstrated that true distinction begins with how well one performs the responsibility placed in one's hands.
A Biology teacher at Lanre Awolokun High School, Gbagada, Lagos, Adeyemi has emerged as the 2026 Maltina Teacher of the Year, earning national recognition and a remarkable reward package that includes ₦10 million in cash, a brand-new Honda HR-V SUV and a three-bedroom apartment.
Her story carries a simple but powerful lesson that highlights the fact that whatever you do, give it your best. Excellence has a way of opening doors that ordinary effort may never reach.
Adeyemi was announced as the overall winner at the grand finale of the competition held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, on Friday.
Beyond her personal rewards, she secured a ₦30 million infrastructure development package for her school, a one-year supply of Maltina and an international capacity-building training opportunity.
The three-bedroom apartment was provided through the Lagos State Government, while the Honda HR-V represents a new addition to the competition's reward package.
Organised by the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, the Maltina Teacher of the Year competition celebrates exceptional contributions to education and recognises teachers whose dedication continues to shape future generations.
Adeyemi's emergence followed a competitive process that attracted 2,243 valid entries from across Nigeria. Ten finalists, representing different states, progressed through online assessments and physical screening before defending their achievements before a panel of judges.
Her victory was not just a personal milestone, it was also a moment of recognition for the teaching profession and the often-uncelebrated individuals who invest their time, knowledge and energy in building society.
Speaking after her emergence, Adeyemi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to teach, inspire and make a difference in the lives of learners.
Yusuf Cariyat of Wisdom International School of Excellence, Abuja, emerged first runner-up, receiving ₦5 million, while Ephraim Jacob Inyangudo of Comprehensive Secondary School, Akwa Ibom, came third with ₦3 million.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, Chairman of the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, Thibaut Boidin and Lagos State Commissioner for Basic Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun, were among dignitaries at the ceremony.
Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Nigerian Breweries for its sustained investment in education, describing the competition as a credible platform for celebrating excellence in teaching. He also emphasised the importance of recognising and supporting teachers because of their role in shaping the future of children and the nation.
Adeyemi now joins an impressive list of previous winners who have been celebrated since the competition began in 2015.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Adeyemi's achievement is the reminder that greatness is not restricted to glamorous offices, influential circles or high-profile professions.
Sometimes, it begins in a classroom, behind a desk, in a workshop, at a business counter or anywhere a person chooses to give their very best.
The lesson is unmistakable, do not underestimate the power of excellence in whatever you do. Give your assignment the commitment it deserves, pursue distinction and allow your work to speak for you.
For when you consistently put the best into what you do, recognition can take you beyond your immediate environment and place you in the company of distinguished personalities.
Give your best, stand out and in time, you may find yourself standing with kings.
